I was sitting on the train yesterday during rush hour, and as many of you know, it’s hard not to overhear the many conversations happening around you. Much to my surprise, I heard one woman say to another: “I think I’m going to just drink shakes for most meals until I fit into my green shorts again”. She justified this by assuring her friend that she’d include protein powder in every shake and that she’d occasionally have “real food” for dinner. Now to some, this could sound like a pretty logical plan, but to anyone who has a deeper understanding of how the human body works, this doesn’t even make the cut for Top 10 respectable “diets” to help get you back into your favorite shorts.
In this day and age, there is so much information to be found on diet and nutrition that it can become extremely overwhelming. One of your friends is doing a low carb diet they swear by, while your health magazine talks of eating pasta and losing fat. You open your web browser to a new article on the latest fad diet, or to the hottest fitness Instagram account, where you’re faced with even more contradicting information. Unless we actively seek out credible sources for guidance in properly fueling our body, it’s very easy to get caught in the never-ending tornado of contradictory information.
If It had been my place, I’d have suggested to Green Shorts Woman that if she wanted to shed some body fat, she could do so without resorting to a liquid diet. So how do we differentiate between the good and the bad? If searching online, make sure you’re source is qualified to be giving such advice. My favorite: asking a professional for help. My ultimate favorite: asking ProNutrition by FitPro West for help!
