As a Personal Trainer, you are always looking for the latest and greatest information that can enhance the training experience for each client. Continuing education is a must in order to provide clients with the safest and most effective training methods to accomplish their fitness goals.
In 2017, I decided to attend The SOMA Institute of Clinical Massage Therapy. This was an 11 month program which introduced the importance of soft tissue work for a variety of common problem areas people experience daily. As I attended this course, I also continued personal training my clients at FitPro West each day. However, over the course of the 11 month program I started to notice that the information I was learning in class could provide a huge advantage for my training clients. I am certain fitness professionals will come across issues with clients such as limited range of motion, pain with movement, and even postural deficiencies. These restrictions can limit a client’s ability to perform exercises prescribed to them in and out of the gym. I decided to create a training model that would allow me to address soft tissue issues for clients that may require this specialized treatment. For example, I can’t expect a client to perform an overhead movement with a weighted load if this client is inhibited by soft tissue restrictions or improper joint tracking. With the help of my clinical massage education, I can go back to the drawing board and address the deficiencies with clients that may have movement restrictions and correct any soft tissue restrictions before we implement a strength program. Correcting movement patterns and strength training are equally important and when used together can create huge gains for a client’s overall progression. I have observed that this is a successful and valued way to help clients progress closer to their fitness goals.
Another great learning opportunity was presented to me by FitPro West Owner Carsten Beckmann, who sent his entire FitPro Training Team to the Exos Strength & Power Workshop. This two-day workshop introduced personal training programming tips as well as new exercises that included Keiser fitness equipment. My clients are of all ages, body types, and abilities thanks to the variety of training methods and programming they continue to improve while having fun along the way!
Working at FitPro West while helping people reach their goals has been an amazing experience for me.
